The bathroom project continues- not too many updates there. We got to pick the height of our shower and asked for an outlet (there was no outlet in the bathroom before!). The Handyman Heroes ran into a problem with the tub drain when it broke because it was so rusted. The toilet was also an issue because the previous tile floor was really thick and the new one is lower profile so the toilet was going to be hovering a little off the ground unless they replaced the drain, so they did that too. Can’t have a big gap under the toilet.

Today I finished painting the inside of the drawers in our apartment garage. Painted insides of drawers isn’t ideal, but they were stained and smelly so oh well. Painting them went really quickly and it turned out well. The drawers definitely look cleaner than before.

In the evening Colin and I went to the house and painted the first coat of the inside of the cabinets. We also hung up the “paint samples” I made of the navy blues we are considering for our cabinets. We are going with Naval, the one on the left.

I gave away our previous paint samples to a neighbor on Nextdoor and she came in and we chatted about paint a bit. We said we’d stay in touch on Nextdoor, which was very sweet. Wish she lived closer by! Our neighbors seem really great though, I got to meet them on the previous Sunday when I was cleaning out the garage of all the dust from the floor refinishing.

We rushed home to talk to our new cat sitter on a video chat on Wednesday night but it was hard to tear ourselves away from getting things done at the house.

On Thursday, I did the second coat of paint inside the cabinets and met the rodent proofers, “MyRodentGuys” at the house. They did a VERY fast walk around the house looking for places the mice could enter, and they found a plethora of mouse sized holes. They said they will email me an estimate for proofing and trapping. They said they would make the house a fortress and they also said they don’t use poison, which I appreciate.

After they left I started the unsavory task of cleaning up all the mouse poop behind the stove. I used spray bleach and a paper towel but I forgot my good waterproof gloves at home so I was using Colin’s, which don’t really fit me. I got a lot of the poop cleaned up but there is still a bunch of chewed up materials behind a small access panel that goes to an unused vent, probably for an old style stove. I also found a weird laminated sign behind the stove that says “Nothing by mouth,” some lovebird feathers, and a few spoons. We aren’t sure if the mice are inside the current stove or not. Not excited to find out but we should before moving in.

Later in the evening we both came back to the house and Colin started removing old closet fixtures from the back bedroom closet. Found more mouse droppings along a gap between the old shelf and the wall. (Also found a tiny bottle of eau de toilette and a pencil in the gap.)

Meanwhile, I protected the floors with plastic and blue tape and started cleaning the walls with TSP cleaner to prepare for painting. I got about 2/3 of the room finished.

The end of the mouse issue is in sight, just trying to celebrate what I got done today without getting too down about the rodent infestation.
